About
Wikivoyage is a project to create a free, complete, up-to-date, and reliable worldwide travel guide. Founded in 2006 after Wikitravel was sold to a for-profit corporation over the community's objections, Wikivoyage (as of 2012) has over 20000 destination guides and other articles in English and many city-level guide pages in other languages (more than a thousand in each of German, Italian, French, Russian, Dutch, Swedish) written and edited by Wikivoyagers from around the globe.
As Wikivoyage is now a project of the Wikimedia Foundation (of Wikipedia fame) a full XML dump of the open-source data may be had at dumps.wikimedia.org.
Data format is similar to Wikipedia (in that Wikimedia uses the same Mediawiki software, XML dump format and free licence for both sets of wikis) but content differs as the travel guides follow a mostly fixed format (get in, see, do, buy, eat, drink, sleep) where individual templated listings in each section have database-like name, phone, addr and description fields which might be a good future target for conversion to vCard or similar.

Wikivoyage is available at http://dumps.wikimedia.org/enwikivoyage (replace 'en' with the desired language, there's also 'fr', 'sv', 'de', 'it', 'ru´ and 'nl' with over 1000 pages each). These are typically updated twice monthly. Various third-party bundles and mobile applications (such as WikiSherpa) use or plan to use this data as a portable, mobile reference for travellers on the move with handheld devices.
